Schema markup is code that tells search engines what your content means rather than just what it says. A page can display “Open until 6pm” and a human understands it instantly; schema is how you tell a machine that this is a closing time and not a sentence.
It has gone from a nice-to-have to genuinely important, because AI-generated answers rely heavily on structured data.

What it actually does
- Rich results. Star ratings, FAQ dropdowns, prices, and business hours shown directly in search results.
- Bigger listings. A result with FAQ expansions takes up more space and pushes competitors down the page.
- Entity clarity. It confirms who you are, where you are, and what you do, which reinforces your Google Business Profile.
- AI answers. Structured data is machine-readable, which makes it easy for AI systems to quote you accurately.
Schema is not a direct ranking factor. It affects how you appear and how easily you get quoted, and both drive clicks.
The types a local business needs
LocalBusiness
The foundation. Name, address, phone, hours, price range, geographic coordinates, and social profiles. It should match your Google Business Profile exactly — a mismatch between the two undermines both.
Service
One per service page. Names the service, describes it, and states the area served. This is how you tell Google that a page is specifically about structured cabling rather than generally about a contractor.
FAQPage
The highest-return type for most small businesses. It makes your questions eligible to appear as expandable dropdowns in search results, and it is the format AI systems most readily draw from. Only mark up questions genuinely visible on the page.
Review and AggregateRating
Handle with care. Google has tightened the rules on self-serving review markup, and misuse can trigger a structured data penalty. Reviews displayed through a legitimate third-party integration are safer than hand-coded ratings.
BreadcrumbList
Shows the page hierarchy in results instead of a raw URL. Small effect, easy win.
How to add it
- An SEO plugin. Yoast and Rank Math generate LocalBusiness and breadcrumb schema automatically. Easiest route for most sites.
- A dedicated schema plugin for finer control over Service and FAQ types.
- Hand-coded JSON-LD in the page head. Most control, needs someone who knows what they are doing.
Whichever route you take, run the result through Google’s Rich Results Test before assuming it works. Broken schema is common and silent.
Mistakes that cause problems
- Marking up content that is not visible on the page — a policy violation
- Fake or self-generated review ratings
- Schema that contradicts your Google Business Profile
- Multiple SEO plugins each emitting their own conflicting schema
- Copying a competitor’s markup without updating the details
Does your business need it?
If you are a local business competing for local searches, yes — LocalBusiness, Service on each service page, and FAQPage wherever you answer questions. It is a few hours of work, it does not need redoing, and it is one of the few things that improves both your search appearance and your chances of being cited by an AI answer.
