Should I Use WordPress or a Website Builder for SEO?

All of the major platforms can rank. The old claim that Wix or Squarespace “cannot do SEO” stopped being true years ago. What still differs is control, portability, and cost at scale — and for a local business building dozens of service and city pages, those differences add up.

We build on WordPress, and here is the honest reasoning rather than the sales version.

What is genuinely the same now

  • Custom title tags and meta descriptions
  • Editable URLs
  • Heading structure
  • Image alt text
  • XML sitemaps and robots control
  • HTTPS
  • Mobile responsiveness
  • Basic schema markup

Anyone telling you a hosted builder cannot do these is working from 2015 information.

Where WordPress genuinely wins

Portability

The biggest one, and the least discussed. You can move a WordPress site to any host, hand it to any developer, and export everything. On a closed platform you are renting, and migrating away means rebuilding.

Scale

Building forty service and city pages with consistent templates, bulk editing, and structured internal linking is straightforward in WordPress and tedious elsewhere. If your local SEO plan involves a lot of pages — and good ones do — this matters.

Schema control

Fine-grained Service, FAQ, and LocalBusiness markup is easier with dedicated plugins. Builders generate basic schema but customizing it is limited.

Cost at scale

A builder is cheaper at first. Once you need a proper SEO plugin, forms, booking, and analytics, the subscription tiers climb, and you still cannot leave.

Where builders genuinely win

  • Maintenance. No plugin updates, no security patching, nothing to break at 2am.
  • Speed of launch. A decent five-page site in a weekend.
  • Security. WordPress is the biggest target on the web precisely because it is the most used.
  • Predictable cost for a small site that will stay small.

If you need a five-page brochure site and will never build a city page, a builder is a perfectly rational choice and anyone telling you otherwise is selling something.

Shopify and ecommerce

For selling products, Shopify is excellent and its SEO limitations are minor. For a local service business, it is the wrong tool.

What matters more than the platform

This is the part people miss. A well-structured Wix site with real content and genuine local links outranks a neglected WordPress site every single day. The platform is maybe five percent of the outcome.

  • Whether each service has its own thorough page
  • Whether the content answers real questions specifically
  • Whether the Google Business Profile is properly built
  • Whether reviews are arriving steadily
  • Whether anyone links to you

The practical recommendation

  • Building a serious local SEO program with many pages, ongoing content, and full control — WordPress.
  • Small brochure site, low maintenance appetite, no plans to scale — a builder is fine.
  • Already on a builder and ranking — do not migrate for SEO reasons alone. Migrations carry real risk and the upside is small.

The worst outcome is rebuilding a working site on a new platform because someone told you the platform was the problem. Usually the content was.
