Do Google Business Profile Categories Affect Rankings?

Yes — more than almost anything else you control. Your primary category is the biggest single ranking lever in the map pack. Change it from the wrong one to the right one and you can move several positions in a couple of weeks, without touching anything else.

It is also the field most businesses set once during signup and never revisit.

How categories work

Google uses your primary category to decide which searches you are eligible for at all. A business categorized as “Electrician” competes in electrician searches. If your actual money-maker is security camera installation, and there is a category for that, listing yourself as an electrician means you are fighting the wrong race and winning nothing.

Secondary categories broaden the searches you can appear for, but they carry considerably less weight than the primary.

How to find the right primary category

Do not guess, and do not pick the one that sounds most impressive. Research it:

  • Search your main money keyword from within your service area
  • Open the profiles of the three businesses in the map pack
  • Note each one’s primary category — it is the one shown under the business name
  • If all three share a category and you do not have it, that is your answer
  • Repeat for your second and third most valuable searches

If the top three use different categories, the market is less settled and you have room to pick the one that matches your highest-value service.

How many secondary categories

Add every category that genuinely describes something you do, and stop there. Typically that is three to seven. Adding unrelated categories to cast a wider net makes your profile less relevant to everything, and in some cases invites a review of the listing.

The test: could you competently perform the service that category names, today, with your current crew? If not, leave it off.

When to change your primary category

When your business has changed, or when research shows the ranking businesses use a different one. Two cautions:

  • Change one thing at a time. Editing the category alongside your name or address in the same week is a suspension trigger.
  • Expect a brief wobble. Rankings can move around for a week or two after a category change before settling.

Categories and your website should agree

If your primary category is Security System Installer but your website barely mentions security systems, the signals conflict. The category should point at a service that has a real, substantial page on your site, and that page should be what your profile links to.

The quick audit

Take ten minutes: list your top three revenue services, search each one, note the primary categories of whoever ranks, and compare against yours. Most businesses find at least one mismatch, and fixing it is the cheapest ranking gain available.
