Suspensions almost always follow a change. You edited your business name, moved your address, switched a category, or added a second profile — and a system flagged it. Google rarely tells you which trigger fired, which is why the appeal process feels like shouting into a void.
Here are the actual causes, ranked by how often they cause suspensions, and exactly what to send when you appeal.

First: know which kind of suspension you have
- Soft suspension — your profile still appears on Maps but you have lost the ability to manage it. Less severe, usually faster to fix.
- Hard suspension — the profile is removed from Maps and Search entirely, along with its reviews. This is the one that hurts.
Reviews come back with a successful appeal on a hard suspension. They are not gone, they are hidden. That is worth knowing before you panic and start a new listing.
The most common triggers
1. Keywords in the business name
“Smith Plumbing Orlando Emergency 24/7” is not your legal business name and Google knows it. Your profile name must match your real-world signage and registration. This is the single most common cause of suspension and the easiest to avoid.
2. Address problems
- A virtual office, coworking desk, or mailbox address
- A residential address left visible on a service area business
- Two businesses sharing one address without distinct signage and staff
- An address that does not match your registration documents
3. Editing several core fields at once
Changing your name, address, and category in the same session looks like a hijack attempt. If you have multiple changes to make, space them out over weeks and make the most defensible one first.
4. Duplicate profiles
A second profile for the same business at the same address will eventually trip enforcement. If you created one because you lost access to the original, that is exactly the pattern that gets both suspended.
5. Category mismatch
Choosing a category that implies a licensed service you do not provide, or one that does not match your website content, invites review.
6. Prohibited business types
Some categories face automatic extra scrutiny — locksmiths, garage door repair, towing, addiction services, and legal services among them. If you are in one of these, expect verification to be strict and keep documentation ready permanently.
What to send with your appeal
Appeals succeed on evidence, not explanation. Gather these before you file.
- Exterior photo showing permanent signage with the business name, taken so the building and street are visible
- Interior photos showing a real working space
- A utility bill at the business address in the business name
- Business registration or licence matching the name and address exactly
- Vehicle wraps if you are a service area business
- Insurance certificate showing the same name and address
Every document should show the same business name, spelled identically. A single mismatch between “Smith Plumbing LLC” and “Smith Plumbing Co” gives the reviewer a reason to deny.
What makes it permanent
- Creating a new profile while an appeal is pending. The worst thing you can do. It confirms the duplicate pattern.
- Filing repeatedly with the same rejected evidence. Fix the underlying problem before refiling.
- Editing the profile mid-appeal. Freeze everything until you have a decision.
- Appealing while your name still contains keywords. Change it to your legal name first, then appeal.
How long it takes
Most appeals resolve in one to three weeks. Complex cases and high-scrutiny categories can run longer. During that time your organic website rankings are unaffected, which is a strong argument for never letting the profile be your only source of leads.
How to avoid it next time
- Use your legal business name, exactly, everywhere
- Never change name, address, and category in the same week
- Keep signage photos and a current utility bill saved in one folder
- Turn on profile notifications so you catch third-party edits
- Do not create a second profile for any reason
