AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization: optimizing to be the source an AI answer cites rather than a blue link someone clicks. You will also see GEO, for Generative Engine Optimization. They describe the same thing.
The honest position: AEO is a shift in emphasis within SEO, not a replacement for it. Most of what makes you citable is what already made you rankable.

The actual difference
Classic SEO competes for a position in a list. The user clicks and lands on you. AEO competes to be the source quoted inside an answer the user may never click away from.
That changes three things: how you write, how much structure matters, and how you measure success.
What genuinely changes
1. Answer placement
Burying the conclusion is now actively costly. Lead with the answer in the first two sentences, then explain. A page that meanders for 400 words before saying anything useful is hard to quote and gets skipped.
2. Self-contained passages
AI systems extract chunks. Each section should make sense on its own, without depending on three paragraphs above it for context.
3. Structured data matters more
Schema was always useful. Now it is the most reliable way to hand a machine unambiguous facts about your business, services, and answers.
4. Specificity beats polish
Concrete numbers, named places, real timeframes. Marketing language is unquotable; facts are quotable.
5. Measurement changes
You may be cited without receiving a click. Brand searches, direct traffic, and phone calls become more meaningful signals than session counts alone.
What does not change at all
- AI systems cite sources they already consider credible — which means links and authority still matter
- Your Google Business Profile is still the backbone of local visibility
- Reviews still drive both rankings and AI summaries
- Technical health still determines whether your content can be read
- Consistent business data still underpins everything
- Genuinely useful content still wins
Anyone selling AEO as a brand new discipline requiring a separate budget is repackaging local SEO. The overlap is roughly ninety percent.
What to actually do differently
- Rewrite the opening of your top pages so the answer comes first
- Add FAQ schema to every page that answers questions
- Break long pages into clearly headed, self-contained sections
- Replace vague claims with specific figures wherever you can
- Make sure your business details match everywhere, because AI answers synthesize across sources
- Ask customers for specific reviews, since review text feeds AI summaries
The realistic view
Zero-click results have been growing for a decade — featured snippets, knowledge panels, and the map pack all answered questions without a click long before AI did. This is the same trend accelerating.
For a local service business the practical impact is smaller than the discourse suggests, because someone who needs a plumber today still has to contact a plumber. What matters is being the business named in the answer. That comes from the same work: a complete profile, real reviews, consistent data, and pages that answer questions plainly.
