How Many Pages Does a Small Business Website Need to Rank?

A local service business needs roughly eight to fifteen pages to compete properly: a homepage, a page for each core service, a handful of city pages, an about page, and a contact page. A one-page site can rank for exactly one thing, and usually does not manage that.

But page count is the wrong thing to optimize for. What matters is that each page has a distinct job.

Why one page cannot rank for six services

Google ranks pages, not businesses. When someone searches “structured cabling Orlando”, Google looks for the page most specifically about structured cabling in Orlando. A homepage covering six services mentions cabling in one paragraph. A competitor has an entire page on it. The competitor wins, every time.

The minimum viable structure

  • Homepage — brand plus primary service plus primary city
  • One page per core service — usually three to six pages
  • Three to five city pages — only for markets where you have real work
  • About — genuine trust signals, team, licences, years in business
  • Contact — with service area, map, hours, and a form
  • Projects or gallery — proof, which converts as well as it ranks

That is eight to fifteen pages for most contractors and professional services. Add supporting blog content on top of that over time.

When you need more

  • Multiple locations — each gets its own location page
  • Many distinct services — a plumber doing repair, repipe, water heaters, drains, and sewer needs five service pages, not one
  • Service-plus-city combinations for your highest-value work
  • Products or equipment lines that people search for by name

When more pages hurt

Adding pages for the sake of a number is actively harmful. Thin pages, duplicated city pages, and half-finished sections dilute the site and can suppress the pages that would otherwise rank.

  • Two pages targeting the same keyword compete with each other
  • Pages under about 300 words rarely earn rankings and can drag on quality signals
  • Orphan pages with no internal links carry almost no weight
  • Duplicated city pages are treated as doorway pages

The order to build in

Sequence matters more than count.

  • First — homepage and every core service page, done properly
  • Second — contact, about, and a projects gallery with real photos
  • Third — your top three city pages, with genuine local content
  • Fourth — service-plus-city pages where you have proof
  • Ongoing — blog posts answering buyer questions, each linking into a service page

The most common mistake is building fifteen city pages before the service pages are strong. City pages inherit authority from the service pages above them; without that foundation they have nothing to inherit.

A quick test

List the services that make you money. Now check whether each one has a page whose whole purpose is that service. Every gap on that list is a search you are not competing for.
