Is SEO Dead Because of AI?

No — but the mix has shifted, and pretending otherwise is not useful either. AI answers absorb a real share of informational searches. They have taken far less from the searches that produce customers for a local business.

Here is what has genuinely moved and what has not.

What AI has actually taken

The losses are concentrated in a specific category: quick factual lookups where a single sentence resolves the question.

  • Definitions and simple how-to answers
  • Conversions, calculations, and specifications
  • Generic informational content with no unique perspective
  • Thin listicles that summarized what other people wrote

If your traffic came mostly from that kind of content, you have felt it. That content was always the most replaceable, and AI simply made the replacement obvious.

What AI has not taken

  • Transactional local searches. Someone with a burst pipe needs a plumber to physically arrive. No answer engine solves that.
  • The map pack. Still the primary interface for choosing a local business.
  • Comparison and decision searches where people want to evaluate real options themselves.
  • Reviews. People still read them, and AI summaries are built from them.
  • Branded searches. If someone is looking for you specifically, they still find you.

Why local businesses are less exposed

AI answers are very good at telling you what a repipe is. They cannot come to your house and do one. For any business where the transaction requires a local human, the answer engine is a step on the path rather than a replacement for it — and increasingly that step ends with the AI naming three businesses. Being one of the three is the new game, and it is won with the same fundamentals.

What has genuinely changed about the work

  • Thin content stopped working entirely. If a model can generate your page in four seconds, it has no value.
  • First-hand experience is the differentiator. Real photos, real prices, real jobs in named places. AI cannot fabricate having done the work.
  • Structured data matters more, because it feeds the systems doing the summarizing.
  • Being cited is a goal alongside being clicked.
  • Brand searches matter more. If people search you by name, no algorithm sits between you and them.

The honest risk

If your entire strategy is generic blog content designed to catch informational traffic, that strategy is in decline and will keep declining. That is worth saying plainly.

If your strategy is a strong Google Business Profile, steady reviews, thorough service pages, real local links, and content that reflects work you actually did — you are in the position AI systems reward, because that is the material they need in order to name anyone at all.

What to do about it

  • Audit your content: anything a model could write without visiting your business is at risk
  • Add first-hand material — photos, prices, timelines, named neighbourhoods
  • Lead every page with a direct answer
  • Add FAQ and Service schema
  • Keep your business data consistent everywhere
  • Keep collecting reviews, and encourage specific ones

None of that is a new discipline. It is the same work, with the padding removed.
